shed on Jan 17, 2019 Alice uses the metaphor of an apple tree to describe the various factors that make up a healthy, sustainable economy. Alice Maggio is an advocate for place-based currencies and local economies. From 2012-2017 she worked at the Schumacher Center for a New Economics, starting as an intern and then as the Director of Programs and Executive Director of BerkShares, the Berkshire region’s local currency. Her work has focused on educating people in her own community and around the world about the role that local financial tools and institutions play in the development of vibrant, just, and sustainable economies. Alice has been interviewed by Paul Solmon for the PBS NewsHour and by Henry Rollins for the History Channel. She represented BerkShares and the Schumacher Center at International Conferences on Complementary Currency Systems in and Barcelona, New York, and Nova Scotia. A graduate of Mt Everett RS in Sheffield, MA, Alice received her B.A. in Sociology and French from Wesleyan University in 2010. She is currently pursuing her Master's degree in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts.
